A total must see of this year’s festival is Podwale street – the most interesting attraction of this year’s Night of Culture. The joint efforts of many artists and creators have transformed Podwale into a tailor’s realm. This space is filled with ties, fabrics, furs, sewing machines and small tailor’s accessories that are provided in XXL sizes. We will find here, among others, Tiescade, yarn bombed mandalas, huge sewing accessories or textures we might have once dreamt about.

On Night of Culture, we want to draw the attention of Lubliners to two very special streets. One of them is often overlooked, while the other no longer exists.

Podwale street offers a beautiful view on the Old Town and rarely ever do we get to see it. This time, we will make this street special. We have invited many artists and creators to work with us on transforming Podwale street and bring back the memories of Krawiecka Street. The last time Krawiecka street appeared on the maps of Lublin was in 1947. It was located in Błonia, in the very spot where the well-trodden path exists towards Tarasy Zamkowe. All that remains of Krawiecka street now are memories, several dozen photographs and a white willow, estimated to be 170 years old.

Begin your walk at the Cathedral, and through a gate consisting of dangling colourful ribbons made for the occasion by Cezary Sielicki enter the world of sewing and tailoring. It will be a space filled with ties, textiles, furs, sewing machines and small tailor’s accessories (scissors, a bobbin, a safety pin) which on this special night will outgrow us (Fruit of the Lump).

The measuring tape will lead us downstreet to a unique exhibition of photography. We will see old photographs (Stefan Kiełsznia, Wiktor Ziółkowski, Stanisław Magierski, Józef Czechowicz, Jan Bułhak, Max Kirnberger and anonymous authors) featuring the charming and dense housing at Krawiecka street, printed on a fabric.

Tiescade – the fruit of our “Mission: ties”  – is an installation made up of several thousand ties we have been collecting since March. The installation has been made by landscape architecture and floristics students under the supervision of Paweł Adamiec. These artists will also give a makeover to the brick wall in Podwale street. Textures, that is narrow niches, will become windows through which we will be able to view various compositions of buttons, zippers or pockets.

Stretching, an object stretched to the maximum limit, will be produced by landscape architecture students from the Catholic University of Lublin under the supervision of Agnieszka Kułak.

The installation “Freedom, Ladies” created by Niezależna Grupa Projektowa Piękno Panie will refer to good old tailoring traditions and the social reforms that did not bypass the textile industry. It will also be a symbol of the freedom of women who exactly 100 years ago received voting rights in Poland.

Yarn bombed mandalas (yarn bombing). Mandalas are harmonious fusions of circles and squares, where the circle is a symbol if the infinite, whereas the square represents the inner sphere, all that’s connected with human and earth. There are various mandalas in existence – some of them strengthen specific areas of human life. Our interpretation aims at positively affecting the mood of Night of Culture’s attendees.

Odds and Ends by Fruit of the Loop – rescaled tailor’s accessories. We will see gigantic scissors, bobbin and huge pins.

Machinery- an installation made up of old sewing machines accompanied by a sonic composition created especially for this occasion by Paweł Romańczuk. We will hear magical music and among all instruments, we will distinctly hear the sounds of working machines.
