Route: Lublin Castle – The Old Town – Wolności Square. Ends by the water tower.
“The medieval water distribution line” , whose construction began as early as 1506, is one of the symbols of Lublin’s development and wealth in the Renaissance. It is all the more significant because only very few cities in Poland could afford such a luxury. Wooden pipes, through a complex system of machines, distributed life-giving water to the hospital of the Holy Spirit, the Carmelites monastery and then, beyond the Cracow Gate, to the “city within the walls”. This oldest water distribution line operated for nearly 170 years before it was dismantled for financial reasons. Two centuries later it was rebuilt thanks to efforts of a certain Jewish engineer.
Guides will talk about the history of Lublin’s water distribution systems during a walk around the Old Town. We will begin by the old Szeroka street, then walk along the Old Town until we reach Wolności Square that features the picturesque model of the old water tower.
