Night of Culture 2016
4/5 June 2016, Lublin
It will be possible during this year’s Night of Culture (4/5 June). The Old Town will take on completely new colours. On that night, nearly all street lights will lit up in cobalt green, clocks on the Kraków Gate will show unusual colours and its interior will be filled with soap bubbles that are an inseparable part of fairy tales, dream and imagination. But this is just the beginning!
Fish return to Rybny (Fish) Square
Ice Team are world masters in ice sculpting. They will create an over 3-metre tall fish sculpture designed especially for Night of Culture. On Night of Culture we will be able to see live how using electric saws and other tools they carve out forms hidden in the lit-up block of ice. Everything is designed so that afer the work ends everyone will be able to examine and touch the object even on a hot summer night.
The Hartwig Alley will be bombarded with a yarn in unusual colours by a non-formal group of ladies attached to the Center for Culture in Lublin. This gorgeous decoration will lead visitors to the most beautful places at this year’s Night of Culture – Kowalska street.
Kowalska Street in retro style
This is where attendees will be able to travel back in time. Despite its lovely architecture Kowalska street is rarely ever visited nowadays. That is why, Night of Culture will restore it to its former glory. This is a must spot to visit on your festival route. Artists from “Niezalezna Grupa Projektowa Piękno Panie” (Eng Beauty Ladies Independent Project Group), “Partyzant” Old Motorcycle Enthusiasts Association and the Lublin Open Air Village Museum will make Kowalska street look like a street out of 1920s/30s. The area will be specially stylized for the occasion – we will change banners, lightning, window shops and add vintage cars. It will become a great setting for retro dance party and photography studio. A special attraction will be a century-old Victorian carousel which was stored in a barn for 50 years. It was restored by Tomasz Siemieński and used in Jan Jakub Kolski’s film “Serce, Serduszko” (The heart and the sweetheart), an ambassador rode it. In June it will launch especially for the citizens of Lublin. Lublin’s Music Theatre will introduce the attendees into retro style mood by performing a concert called “I know a street in Lublin…”. This will be followed by The Mark Shepherd’s Swing Quartet whose music will set the 20/30s tone.
We will try our luck in tombola – a lottery where you can win, among others, participation in a stylized session inside Roman Kravchenko’s photography workshop. The Contemporary Dance Group from Lublin’s University of Technology will present Swing City – fragments of a show that perfectly recreates the mood of the 1920s. We will also have impovisers. Innymi Słowy Teatr Impro team will make sure we all have a great time.
The Fire Tree
Po Farze Square wll feature an impressive tree designed by Jarosław Koziara. This metal installation over 10 metres tall refers to the legend of Leszek Czarny’s dream, among other things. The construction will contain several thousands special candles which will light up inside special fiery-coloured lanterns. The artist has also planned subtle sound effects so listen in.
The Magical Backyard at Kraków Gate
Glittering fairy tale furniture on tall legs will make it seem that we have entered the world of Alice in Wonderland. This enchanting installation, designed by Natalia Głowacka,
The installation was created with the support of Elmax- lightning experts. The unoqie charm of the spot will be highlighted by an installation created by a research group of art students from Maria Curie Sklodowska University. The installation consists of a few dozen cups that will be hanged on trees as inconspicuous lamps. Mad Hatter’s Tea Party theme makes it a must event to attend on Night of Culture.
The Music Van at Królewska Street, or the Lublin Sounds Zone is an interesting space where you will sit comfortably on car tires and seats, listening to : Mel Tripson, Phedora, Workplace, Servants of Silence (these bands have been chosen by the jury of the Lublin Music Database) and guest stars Good Morning Fire Eater from Munster. A van parked across the Królewska street will be the stage for the bands.
Greenery and the city loom, or Nancy-knitting at Lubartowska street
Is it possible to imagine Lubartowska street as an all-green square? Yes, it is! Right by the Lublin City Council we will see a vivid, 800 squre metre lawn. The roadway will transform into an inhabitants-friendly space, where out of a colourful thread we will all jointly weave a relaxation tunel a few metres long. Inside, we will put rubber balls to sit or lie on. This joint action will surprise all attendees. A busy street will become a relaxation zone. This project has been created by Superblue Design from the UK.
A few metres down the Lubartowska street we will find ourselves in an old cinema. It is there, on the sloping street, that our cinema will be set up. Among other things, we will see the adaption of Isaac Bashevis Singer’s „The Magician of Lublin” directed by Menahem Golan. The story depicts the adventures of a wandering magician, Yasha Mazur, who is by far the most famous literary protagonist associated with our town. Aside from its artistic merits, the film offers a unique opportunity to see the director’s vision of Lublin which was portrayed by two German cities – Berlin and Munich.
Lublin Castle Stage
The next attraction of this year’s Night of Culture will be the performance of two bands from outside Lublin and even outside Poland. We will see artists from Denmark and Great Britain. Their overall work and approach towards music fits in perfectly with the premises of this year’s Night of Culture. Habadeuk is a 9-strong orchestra from Copenhagen, which uniquely combines Danish folk, jazz themes and fiery rock’n’roll.
At concerts, they tend to pull the audience into rip-roaring fun and make everyone remember their name for a very, very long time. Our next guest is an English trio Kings of the South Seas. Their concerts are a journey to the sea. They offer original interpretations of sea chanties. However, we would be wrong to expect classic port songs. The band’s music is closer to dark ballads in the style of Nick Cave or The Tiger Lillies, and their concersts are closer to a stage shows where acoustic sounds blend with strong rock arrangements and deep vocal, creating a powerful effect.
A Night at the Brewery
For a few years now, the Brewery at Bernardyńska street has been an important venue of Night of Culture. It hosted many excellent artists, becoming a stage for special projects, unique events and spectacular arrangements. We still remember, for instance, a song about Lublin written by Junior Stress or Pablopavo’s excellent concert. This year will not be any different – Bernardyńska street will offer fabulous music, giving the Night of Culture attendees a lot of joy and unforgettable experiences. Soon we will reveal the full programme of the Night at the Brewery.
The Zone of Creativity and Inspiration at the square in front of Andersen’s Theatre.
We will find several dozen workshops, shows, meetings and presentations. You will be able to try your hand at wickerwork, robot controlling; we will learn what is Rubens’ tube and look through a large-sized kaleidoscope. The participants will be able to make the tiniest painting in the world, try their hands at fencing or hula-hoop. Up on the venue’s fence, we will put a presentations of Totems, or recycled plastic objects made by elementary school students and kindergarten kids from Lublin.
Night of Culture Theatre
Stage plays are an inseparable part of Night of Culture programme. This year, Juliusz Osterwa Theatre will “Boldly Improvise” yet again and Poławiacze Pereł Improv Theatre will open a beauty salon for ladies and gentlemen – Barbershop Songs. Hans Christian Andersen Theatre will present a monodrama “Ja Maria” (I, Maria) performed by Mirella Rogoza-Biel. One of our most appealing offers will definitely be the French pantomime “Petite, tu grandiras….”, or “Little girl, you will grow up”, a tale about everyday life consisting of little things, in which a child gradually grows into a woman (dir. Celia Chauviere). Crime thrills will be provided by actors involved in „The private investigation of inspector Maciejewski”. The adaptation has been made by the author of “Next Tuesday’s Pogrom” Marcin Wroński jointly with the director Łukasz Witt – Michałowski. At the Center for Culture, we will be able to see neTTheatre’s “Bieguny” (Eng. Poles) directed by Paweł Passini and in front of the building we will see a spectacular show „Wielka Woda” (Eng. Great Water) by Ad Spectatores Theatre from Wrocław and directed by Maciej Masztalski. The programme will also include an original, unique project #Enterorestes. The spectacle is based on the Rakowiska murder that shook all Poland. The project was created by students of Ludwik Solski Academy for the Dramatic Arts and directed by Grzegorz Grecas. The NeTTheatre team – Theatre in the Web is repsonsible for the organizational aspects of the show.
The Old Theatre will host a Jazz Jam Session, featuring, among others,. Dorota Miśkiewicz, Sebastian Frankiewicz, Krzysztof Herdzin, Robert Kubiszyn, Bartosz Łęczycki, Marek Napiórkowski and Skicki-Skiuk. Several excellent jazz musician associated with The old theatre as well as winners of this year’s competition at the Wroclaw’s Jazz on the Odra Festival will combine their efforts in a night time improvisation on the stage of the Old Theatre. Lublin Street Band will provide additional bursts of jazz energy in the patio of the Centre for Culture in Lublin.
The Dancing Bridge of Culture, or the accumulation of dance energies in various forms. We will see both contemporary and traditional dances performed by the youngest and beginner artists, as well as pros. We will be able to admire the shows, but also take part in dance workshops. We can expect energetic Zumba Fluo Party and Zumba Fever! as well as the largest in Lublin Rueda de Casino. Rueda de Casino is a very spectacular and very specific type of Cuban round salsa that can include an unlimited number of dancing pairs. Las Flamenquitas Buenas, a group of flamenco dancers from Lublin, will dance traditional palo, puro flamenco and flamenco nuevo
