Filfthy Reactionary Dwarves. Polish Independence Underground in the years 1944-1956. The exhibition touches on many aspects of the history of the Polish underground in the years 1944-1956. The phrase used in the title of the event, “filfthy reactionary dwarves”, is a derisive name for the post-war underground, promoted by the Communist regime in order to denigrate their memory. The juxtaposition of this slogan with the featured material only serves to further highlight the drama of the people who continued to fight in the underground. We are presented with a nutshell summary of the entire history of the underground, from its dramatic beginnings during the period of liberation from the German occupation, to the often hopeless fight against the Eastern regime.
Zapora, dir. Konrad Starczewski with an introduction by dr Sławomir Poleszak, a historian at the Institute of National Remembrance in Lublin. “Zapora” tells the story of one of the most indomitable leaders of the Polish underground, major Hieronim Dekutowski. It is most of all a collection of memories of Zapora’s subordinates, colleagues, friends and family. Their stories create an image of a demanding and stubborn man, but also a sensitive a yearning for normal life. The stories told by his old subordinates are complemented by photos, documents and animations showing the most important actions of Zapora’s soldiers. Major Dekutowski, just like other cursed soldiers, was sentenced by the Communists to eternal oblivion. He has returned as a hero.
